wednesday witterThis is a very quick witter as I am en route to Dorset and hadn’t quite realised it was Wednesday again so soon!  Honestly, I can’t wait for the holidays to be over and for normal service to resume.

This time next week it will be my first day back at teaching for a year.  I start my new job and I am looking forward to it.  I think.  I am certainly looking forward to the payslip each month.  My year off has been a learning curve and a blogging bonanza.  As I will be working part-time (2 days a week as Head of Dept) I still have some sanctuary time to write, which has all worked out rather well.  My latest project will be announced soon, but I am not allowed to say yet….! (don’t get too excited)

Blog on, witter away and join the linky below!

wednesday witter

I went to the seaside on Monday.  Dymchurch to be precise.  The kids loved it and they had what I call toddler rides which my kids LOVED.  I went there as a child, so it was a bit of a trip down memory lane but as ever, adult eyes betrayed the joys of youthful exhilaration and where I now saw rubbish and tattoos, they saw bumper cars and ice cream.  Health and Safety won the day with the Helter Skelter being a filled in tube ride and the bumper cars having a notice requiring ‘No Bumping’.  Really?  But THAT’S what it’s all about!!!

Have we really come so far down the litigious ladder that even fairground rides are tamed to indulge a society that will sue you for an extra-splashy log flume?  It seems so.  I half-expected the ghost train to have a disclaimer to sign as you burst through the firts set of luminous doors….

All this aside, we paddled in the sea and posted an awful lot of 2Ps into the arcade machines.  It was a good old-fashioned day at the seaside and the kids loved it as much as I did.  Just don’t mention the public toilets….20p for the privilege of being locked in a cubicle of iniquity that made me crave dettol and a tetanus booster….

wednesday witter

Well, so far this week it’s been glorious sunshine and we’ve ben taking full advantage and going out with the kids as much as possible.  Yesterday morning was a bit gloomy so I/we decided to paint the downstairs hallway which was looking battered, dull and very magnolia.  We only moved in last year and haven’t done any decorating as the whole house is magnolia and not desperate, but bit by bit we will freshen the place up and drop a hint of colour in here and there.    Amid the painting chaos (try painting the main thoroughfare with three kids and two dogs) was my husband, screwdriver in hand, taking off wall sockets for me to paint under and installing a new doorbell.  In doing so we managed to set the house alarm off that would then not deactivate.  It was interesting to see how husband and I react in a crisis.  I was methodically thinking of what we could do to stop it and trying out a few things; Husband was shouting and running around like a headless chicken.  His enraged shouts of ‘Where’s the bloody screwdriver gone?’ as he was on the phone to the alarm company and trying to take the fuse out just made me giggle (which did not calm the atmosphere!).  Alarm muted, he then proceded to fix the (2nd) new doorbell he’d bought.  Unsuccessfully.  The previous one worked fine but was in the hallway and was big ugly and yellowing.  Half an hour of googling wiring diagrams later I suggested he just put white case of the new doorbell over the old one.  Ta-da!  Job done in 2 minutes!  Well, an hour and 5 minutes….

How’s your week been so far?  If you’re blogging today, why not link up below and meet a few new bloggers?

wednesday witter

It’s Wednesday, it’s time to witter!

Join up your blog with the linky below and tell us what’s going on with you.

I am feeling a bit disorientated at the moment.  The school holidays are upsetting my routine!  It’s been three weeks and it feels like school should be imminent but there are another four weeks to go!  Which is a bit of a poke in the ribs to me as I start work again in the new term.  I am going back to teaching as head of department, and have secured a part-time post, so just two days a week.  I am looking forward to dusting the cobwebs off my brain and the challenge of a new school and some reorganisation of the curriculum. It’s the best of both worlds really – work and some money going into my account but still time at home with Littlest and plenty of time to keep blogging!  I have some exciting news on my blogging, but I am not sure whether I can reveal anything yet….da, da, DA!  Will keep you posted!

british museum ancient greeks

Yesterday we went The British Museum.  I took the older two kids and on the whole is was pretty successful.  We opted for the2012 olympic gold medals museum in walking distance of Charing Cross and as it happens they had an Olympic trail to follow (and loads of other kids stuff, if you’re interested) so after much giggling about chipped willies on all the statues we wandered through models of Olympia, decorated vases, beautiful mosaics and ended up face to face with some genuine 2012 Olympic Gold Medals!  VERY exciting!  And good God, they are chunky.  You’d need to be an athlete just to hold your head up when wearing one.  They are emblazoned with the goddess Nike on one side (as are all past summer olympic medals) and the 2012 symbol on the other.  Alas, this now has new meaning to me.  Avoiding reading the next bit if you don’t want to have this image ruined forever.  A friend told me it looked like Lisa Simpson giving someone a blow-job.  And now that’s ALL I can see when I look at it.  I know – I apologise.  Not the most savoury of images for such a contest…..

rossopomodoroAfter the museum, my son was flagging somewhat so we went for lunch in a nice italian restaurant, Rossopomodoro, which had an amusing message on its chalkboard behind the chefs.  Luckily, my daughter (who can now read fluently) did not notice/make comment on it!  However, BFF and I had a giggle over our pasta.

Despite picking the one day when there was an Olympic event in the centre of London (triathlon) it was, as predicted, pretty quiet and certainly not the thronging crowds you would have expected.  We only live an hour away, so it’s a very do-able trip but also exciting for the kids.  I think they need to be immersed in different experiences and London certainly gives that.

So, that’s my news for the week so far.  If you’re a blogger, let me know what you’ve been up to and link up below!

Yesterday, with the amazing weather we are having, we decided to go to the beach; Camber Sands to be exact. Our trips to the beach usually involve a HUGE amount of katundu in a bag so big that I could climb into, should I want to smuggle myself over a border at any point.

Once camp is set up, I usually implant myself on to a beach chair in the shady bit by the windbreak and Husband gets all ‘manly’ and digs a Freudian trench and enormous sandcastle with the kids. This suits me fine. I like the idea of the beach and I know the kids love it, but adept as we are at getting all our crap together in a matter of minutes, it’s the slathering myself in sun-cream finished off with a sand crust that drives me squirmy. I have very pale skin and burn in a gnat’s sneeze so I have to wear the kids’ factor 200, consistency of sudocrem type stuff which is the equivalent of wearing a sticky wetsuit. Then, because I would never subject the beach to much of my bare flesh, I cover up anyway with a T-shirt and shorts.

Talking of bare flesh, there was an awful lot of it on show yesterday….much of it voluminous, in a bikini/speedos and lobster-red. I hesitate to make further comment, but I am sure that what you are picturing in your mind right now is wholly accurate. And yes, it’s not a pretty sight.

Another beach ‘thing’ that always makes me chuckle is how territorial everybody gets. It reminds me of the scene in ‘Far and Away’ where ‘Irish’ Tom Cruise rides onto the plains of Oklahoma* to stake his claim to a piece of land. Ah, is it just me who remembers that film? Anyhow, you get the idea – Brits laden with pop-up tents, buckets and spades and huge inflatable boats trooping through the sand to get the best pitch. Then (and we do this too) the mallet comes out and the windbreaks are triumphantly secured into the hot sand to peg out our ‘area’. Sometimes I think the men should just pee around the perimeter to properly mark their territory. Should you stray into another’s patch whilst en route to ice-creams, sunglasses are lowered and a glowering stare comes at you suggesting that if I should flip my flop any further I might be set upon by the beach police. The panic of the lady next to me yesterday when her son picked up one of our spades and started digging and the confusion when I said he was welcome to use our stuff and join in was bemusing, but a bit sad really. She was lovely, but clearly my act of ‘share and share alike’ was a new experience for her. Which is a pity.

One thing we always dig on the beach, out of habit rather than necessity these days, is a naughty hole. The beach equivalent to the naughty step. We used to put my son in it after he repeatedly bashed my daughter with his spade/kicked over her sandcastle/stole her shells and buried her crocs so we couldn’t find them for a good hour. It was just deep enough that he couldn’t get out without a bit of help, but not so deep that the beach patrol was dialling the NSPCC. Worked a treat. But never so well as the threat of no ice-cream.

Our day was finished off with a quick trip to the nearby town of Rye for refreshment and a climb of the tower. The sign that tells you to ‘mind your head’ is displayed in various languages. The German literally translates as ‘Make like a turtle’ which always makes me chuckle. Then it was home to shower off the day. There was certainly no need to exfoliate with the amount of sand stuck to my legs and Littlest’s car seat seems to now have it’s very own eco-system going on, but it was worth it for the look on my kids’ faces throughout the morning. There was no place they’d rather be.

Welcome to Wednesday Witter!  Please do join in the linky below and add your wittersome post about what you’ve been up to this week!  And if you could grab the badge code from my sidebar and add the badge to your post I’d me much obliged.   And please take the time to read and coment on some of the other posts linked up.  Thank you!

Building on the, ahem, success of last week’s Wednesday Witter, I hope you’ve all got the hang of it by now and are ready to join the linky and spread the blogging love.  You can write about anything – from what the dog did last night to how you met George Clooney in Tesco and helped him to scan his salami…

This week is the first week of our school holidays!  Yippee – I think.  For me this means not only are the kids home, but Husband too.  7 weeks of all of them driving me mad and scuppering me on how much time I actually spend blogging doing very important things on the laptop.

olympic torch

In the Olympic spirit I stayed at home as the torch graced the streets of Tunbridge Wells yesterday.  To be fair, Husband went with the older two kids and I stayed at home with Littlest who has no concept of what it is, won’t remember it and would have been bored, irritable, in a pram, in the crowds and….well – you can see why home was an appealing option.  I did think I could see it on Friday as it comes through Maidstone if I was immersed in regret, but I’m not, so I won’t.

This morning is Littlest’s last day at nursery until September when she starts in the kindergarten room – I can’t believe she is growing up so fast!  I am lucky that I have a lovely nursery that does term-time for parents who are teachers (i.e.us) so it has all worked out really well.  I am straying into Alpha-mum territory this holiday as I am making my kids do workbooks and projects to keep their brains topped up until September.  I’m all for switching off and enjoying the break, but an hour of Maths/English each week won’t hurt them and will, hopefully, give me a moment’s peace.  That or I will be in full teacher mode and helping them.

aulos recorder
We have decided to go ahead and trial piano lessons with Eldest but in the meanwhile I have bought her a recorder.  A proper Aulos one like we had as kids – even the bag hasn’t changed!  Ah, the memories of being consigned to the upstairs loo to practise.  AND I CAN NOW SEE WHY!!!  Mother, I take it all back.  Your wisdom was only flawed by letting me have the bloody thing in the first place.  My daughter’s enthusiasm knows no bounds and if I have to hear ‘Hot Cross Buns’ one more time I am going to fling the flippin’ thing into the rhododendron bush as hard as I can.  Every time she speaks to me her conversation is prefaced with ‘Can I play you….’  I smile, and try to mean it but can’t bring myself to bare teeth.  ’Of course, darling! Let Mummy just get a G&T and it will be bearable, I mean beautiful’.

What was I thinking???  I swear it’s penance for all those times I embarass her by singing in the shopping centre.

What have you been up to this week?  Blog it then log it in the linky below!

wednesday witter

Welcome to the first Wednesday Witter!  Please do join in the linky below and add your wittersome post about what you’ve been up to this week!  And if you could grab the badge code from my sidebar and add the badge to your post I’d me much obliged.  Mainly because it took me about an hour and a half to actually get the thing designed and working!  And please take the time to read and coment on some of the other posts linked up.  Thank you!

I was taken aback on Monday by a phone call from my daughter’s nursery asking if I was coming to parents’ evening? I had no idea it was even happening and thought it a tad odd for a two-year old but along I went! Actually it was lovely, helped by the fact they offered me wine or Pimms when I got there. It was just a quick chat about Littlest and a chance to take her folder home and see photos, record-keeping etc. I love getting a glimpse into what she’s like when she’s apart from us. Pretty similar it seems!

Although we have not had the Biblical rain storms, like most people I am fed up with the weather and it is starting to dull the mood – a bit like SAD in the winter. The summer holidays start for the kids at the end of the week and I am dreading a summer of being stuck inside. We are not going on holiday so have a few day trips planned – all of which require a degree of normality in the weather. Just not wet would be fine…any sunshine a bonus.

Eldest daughter has asked have music lessons. This puts us in a quandary. I would love her to learn an instrument and it is something I always regret never having done. My self-taught renditions of Simon & Garfunkel on the piano do not count! The first hurdle is cost; of lessons and instrument. Secondly comes the questions of which instrument? ( I refuse to let her play anything she has to blow into – my OCD issues I’m afraid). Then there’s the daily battle to make her practise. I am investigating cost and practicalities and then we’ll see…..

This weekend I am off to the Glynde Food Festival in East Sussex – yum!  I shall be blogging about it on my foodie blog, What Would Nigella Do? and the nice organisers are even letting me loose to interview some of the celebrity chefs!  Pleeease let the sun shine!

Well, that’s about it for me.  What have you been up to?  Go on….join in!  Humour me and feel some blogging love!
